Destination: Bali
Bali, also known as the “Island of the Gods,” is a favorite destination of ours, with landscapes varying from sandy beaches to hills and mountains to rugged coastlines to green rice terraces. This picturesque landscape is complemented by the deeply spiritual and unique culture of Balinese Hinduism, including most of Indonesia’s Hindu population. The island of 4 million people offers everything from world-class surfing and diving to cultural and archaeological sites to posh bars and chic clubs.
Bali has ranked as a top destination in publications like Travel & Leisure Magazine and Lonely Planet over the years due to the rich cultural history of the island and diverse activities found there. The island is thought to have been first settled by explorers from China as early as 2500 BC, and over the years has variously been influenced by Buddhists, Hindus, Javanese, Muslims, Dutch, and the Japanese, which has led to unique cultural customs found only in Bali.
The coastal regions of Bali offer everything from spectacular surf waves to scuba diving for all levels to hidden white sand beaches. Slightly inland, rice paddies and terraces characterize the landscape, offering beautiful vistas to putter around on a scooter during the day. Various volcanoes in Bali give hikers the chance to walk above the clouds, while those seeking culture or nightlife can visit the towns and cities in Bali to experience Balinese food, drink, dance, and arts. For those looking to venture out further, the neighboring islands of Java and Lombok provide plenty of additional destinations to visit, including the metropolis of Jakarta, secluded beaches, pristine islands, and ancient temples.

The Bali Workspace
The workspace we will use in Bali is a converted traditional Balinese villa. The space is a short stroll from a beach popular with surfers, nestled between winding lanes that cross through rice fields. The space has dedicated high-speed connections from 3 different Internet service providers, storage lockers, a swimming pool, a cafe and restaurant attached, and has restaurants, bars, and convenience stores on the same street. The nearby area is inhabited by local Balinese but also hosts a population of foreigners looking for a laid-back lifestyle, and so provides a good mix of Western and Indonesian flavor. The chic Seminyak/Legian area is within 20-30 minutes by taxi or scooter for those looking for more shopping, restaurants, bars and clubbing.

Bali Activities
Bali offers many activities that guests may choose to do during the program. We request that all of our guests attend a few dinner or drink social events in order to get to know other participants. Aside from these events, guests may organize or participate in many optional events or activities. Examples of activities for those seeking to stay active include hikes, surf classes, diving or snorkeling trips, yoga, and cycling. For those looking for cultural activities, Bali offers classes or excursions for art, food, dance, music, or history. If you or your group would like us to organize any specific activities or events, please email us to let us know.

Our Guests
You can expect other DigitalOutposts guests to come from a variety of backgrounds. We believe a diverse group of participants helps the exchange of ideas and enriches the experience for everyone involved. For upcoming sessions, we’re talking to individuals and teams with backgrounds in photography, design, software development, entrepreneurship, online marketing, business, journalism, and more.
